How To Deal With Stress Once And For All

You may have come here wanting to learn about a magic pill that makes all your chronic stress go away.  The reality is, I can’t give you that pill.

If you suffer from depression or the “blues” regularly, there are supplements like B12, Natural Lithium, GABA, St. John’s Wort, Magnesium, Kava, or L-Tryptophan that you can take that will help you, but these won’t cure your problem.

I don’t want to see you popping supplements for the rest of your life to “manage” an issue.  I want to see you living healthy and happy.

You can follow the normal advice of managing stress by working out, starting a hobby or you can manage stress through meditation and yoga.

While I would never knock these therapies (because they do work at boosting your feel good hormones), you probably didn’t come here to read what every other website will tell you about stress reduction.

If you know me then you know that I am an antagonist to mainstream wellness.  This means that I will go a step (or leap) beyond what is considered normal information in taking care of your body, mind, and soul.

I don’t like to tell people the band-aid answers to wellness.  These answers will make you feel a little better but will probably never make huge changes in your life.

When I coach people who are dealing with chronic stress, I lead them on a discovery on how to deal with stress.  To do that you need to get to the root of the problem.  This usually comes down to two things.

Diet and Looking at your life in truth.

Depression often manifests if you feel you are not living your true purpose.  You know that feeling, like there should be more. If you are stuck in a job that pays your bills but doesn’t pay your spirit, there is that mild underlying feeling of being trapped and not free.

I’m not telling you to quit your job, what I am telling you is that the core of you is probably feeling unfulfilled and this unfortunately spreads to color all aspects of your life.  Often times, feeling unfilled will manifest as marital problems, problems with your kids and family, and even money problems.

If you love your job, you need to figure out how to serve people in your current job or position.  If you hate your job, find a way that you can do what you want and transition into that.

When I’m feeling a little stuck in life and just BLAH, I’ll go give to people.  I’ll go out and find every way possible to help people, whether it is:

  • Complimenting people
  • Paying for someone’s meal
  • Leaving some money under a loaf of bread
  • Holding the door for people
  • Helping people pack their car full of groceries
  • Returning someone’s cart for them
  • Giving food to homeless people

Or anything else that strikes me in the moment.  I keep giving until I feel my spirit is filled. Our work is to give to others, not just pay out bills.  This will move that BLAH feeling right on out and leave me feeling empowered and on purpose, even if I am unsure of my current situation.

Now, let’s get into diet.  

Your brain and hormones that make you feel calm and happy are regulated by your gut.  Yep, that’s right.  Your gut is actually your brain!  The first thing I always recommend to people besides eating a whole food diet and staying as far away from processed foods as possible is taking a good probiotic supplement.  The second thing I recommend is eating foods to feed those healthy probiotics.  These foods are known as fermented foods.

While I don’t normally agree with mainstream Dr. Oz, he does have a good list of prebiotic foods.

You see, your healthy probiotics are your soldiers.  They fight the bad guys. When they become undernourished, weak, or even begin to die off in large numbers, they begin to lose the battle and you start to see health problems begin.
