Natural Teeth Whitening
Natural Teeth Whitening is usually safe but sometimes lacks the efficacy of what you can get at the dentist. However, ruining my enamel is not on my to-do list anytime soon.
I gave up chemical toothpastes years and years ago. I didn’t want to put Fluoride, Sugars, Artificial Colors, Sodium Laurel Sulfates or other toxic neurotoxins in my mouth. My teeth have stayed healthy.
I have tried most natural toothpastes over the years. Every time I go to the dentist, they always tell me my teeth are really good. One day, I wasn’t thinking after a pretty substantial injury to my mouth, so I threw some pure iodine into my mouth. While, my mouth healed quickly and without infection, I was horrified to see brown teeth. Seriously. Teeth are like tiny tunnels and they sucked up that dark iodine.
On the bright side, I have awesome, healthy gums.
On the not so bright side, I was left with very darkly stained teeth. You live and learn and I learned to never put iodine in my mouth in that way again!
I went on a mad girl hunt to find something natural to whiten my teeth. I tried:
- Natural tooth whitening toothpastes
- Tooth Soap
- Oil pulling
- Banana Peel
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Baking soda & peroxide
- Baking soda & strawberry
- Coconut oil & Clay
I like food grade hydrogen peroxide and use that as my mouth wash. Baking soda, salt, and some clays are abrasive so they shouldn’t be used every day.
The natural toothpastes from the store never really did much, I know tooth soap is really good for helping to regrow enamel but it was near impossible to get my kids to use it.
The banana peel didn’t do much so I set out to make a concoction of what did work and the results? Naturally white and healthy teeth.
Charcoal is amazing for pulling stains out of teeth and binding the nasty trouble causing bacteria but I could never brush my teeth long enough for it to really do amazing things.
Here is my recipe for my DIY teeth whitening:
- 4 Tablespoon coconut oil
- 4 capsules activated charcoal or 1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder
- 6 drops lemon essential oil
- 6 drops sweet orange essential oil
- 3 drops myrrh essential oil
- 3 drops Frankincense essential oil
Put all of this together in an immersion blender cup and use the immersion blender to whip all the ingredients together. If you are using the charcoal capsules, make sure to open and empty the capsules into the mix. Discard the empty capsules.
Transfer this to a sealed container and place in your bathroom. Take a 1/4 teaspoon scoop every morning and evening and use this mixture to oil pull. Swish and suck the oil through your teeth for 10-20 minutes. Do not swallow the mixture because it is full of bacterial nasties. Read more about oil pulling here. When finished, spit it in the sink and rinse your mouth and spit out the water.
Rinse your mouth with food grade hydrogen peroxide. Use a silicon finger brush to remove any black charcoal still hanging around your teeth and make sure you use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue. Tongue scraping or tongue brushing is a very simple but effective health practice that has a huge impact on the health of your body, just like oil pulling does! You can read more about that here.
You will never have to brush your teeth with a normal toothbrush again. You will wake up in the morning with your teeth feeling clean, like you have just had a cleaning from the dentist. It’s amazing. No more morning mouth or fuzzy feeling teeth and you may never have to buy another toothbrush again.
Tooth brushes actually harm your teeth by wearing down the enamel over time. This is a good alternative to keep your teeth super healthy.
Using a homemade tooth whitener saves you money, removes excess chemicals from your daily routine, and helps to preserve your teeth for down the road.
Like most things in life, you have to continue to use something with consistency to see the results and benefits. Not only will the natural tooth whitening recipe whiten your teeth but it will make them much healthier years to come, saving you dental expenses and the potential loss of your teeth.
